Before the First Cleanse: What Really Happens in a Coco Consultation

You arrive at Coco, take off your coat, and sit down in the treatment room. Before the cleanser comes out, there is a conversation. It lasts around ten minutes. It might feel like a small part of the appointment, but it is actually the foundation of the whole treatment. This is your consultation, and it is where the therapist learns how to make the next hour work for you.
More than a formality
A consultation is not a box-ticking exercise. It is not there to delay the nice part. It is there because skin is personal. Two clients can walk in with the same concern and need completely different things. One might need hydration and reassurance. Another might need gentle exfoliation and a plan for congested skin. A third might need us to slow down and avoid active ingredients altogether. Without the chat, we would be guessing.
At Coco, the consultation sets the direction for everything from the products we choose to the pressure we use and the mask we finish with. It also gives you a chance to ask questions, flag anything that makes you nervous, and tell us what you actually want from the appointment.
What we ask, and why
We usually start with a simple question: what has brought you in today? Your answer might be a special event, a change in your skin, or simply the need for an hour to yourself. All of those are valid. From there, we ask about your skin history, your current routine, and any products you are using. We may ask about sensitivity, redness, breakouts, dryness, or oiliness. We may also ask about recent salon treatments, waxing, or anything that might affect how your skin responds.
We ask about general health because it can affect your comfort and safety during treatment. If something sounds medical, we will say so and suggest you speak to your GP. We are not here to diagnose. We are here to make sure the treatment is appropriate and comfortable for you.
The questions behind the questions
When we ask what you cleanse with, we are listening for whether your routine is gentle or stripping. When we ask how often you exfoliate, we are trying to work out whether your skin is being overworked. When we ask about sunscreen, we are thinking about protection and pigmentation. When we ask about sleep, stress, travel, or central heating, we are building a picture of what your skin is dealing with day to day.
We also ask about time and budget. That might sound practical rather than skin-focused, but it matters. A treatment only works if you can maintain the results at home without turning your routine into a second job. We would rather suggest two simple steps you will actually use than five products that will sit in a drawer.
How to explain your goals clearly
You do not need to use technical language. In fact, plain descriptions are often more useful. Instead of saying you want glow, tell us that your makeup has been sitting badly, or that your cheeks feel tight by lunchtime. Instead of saying your skin is sensitive, tell us what happens when you use a new product. Does it sting? Flake? Go red? Feel hot?
It also helps to mention anything you are worried about. If you dislike strong scents, prefer a lighter massage, feel nervous about extractions, or have a big event coming up, say so. We can adjust. The ten-minute chat is not a test. It is a conversation, and you are allowed to change your mind halfway through it.
When your skin changes its mind
Skin is not fixed. It changes with the seasons, with stress, with travel, with medication, and with the products we use. A routine that felt lovely in September may feel too rich in January. A treatment that suited you last summer may need simplifying now. That is why we check in at the start of every appointment, not just the first one.
If you arrive with a flare-up, a reaction, or a patch of dryness you do not recognise, tell us. We can change the plan. A good therapist would always rather adjust the treatment than push ahead with something that no longer suits your skin.
The ten-minute investment
The consultation may take time away from the treatment itself, but it makes the rest of the appointment better. It is how we choose the right cleanser, decide whether to exfoliate, select a mask, and set the right level of pressure. It is also how we make sure you leave feeling looked after rather than processed.
At Coco, we want your treatment to fit your life and your skin. That starts with listening. If you are booking your first appointment, come as you are. You do not need to arrive with a perfect routine or a list of the right words. Just bring your questions, your concerns, and a willingness to have a chat. The first cleanse can wait ten minutes.
